Matteo believes that therapy is a process that evolves over time where a client uses the interaction and relationship to grow and increase their awareness and confidence. That is the counselor’s job is to listen with curiosity, be an attentive guide to the process, and provide support and feedback when requested, and kind insights when appropriate.
Matteo states:
It may feel like my first job is to partner with you; to align together and see some of the challenges of your life. We may then have forged a strong enough working alliance together to explore some of your assumptions about life or some of the trajectory you have been on for a while now. Humans have a trajectory they tend to remain upon and it is our job together to co-create the best path toward well-being. People sometimes say they are, “stuck in a rut.”
It is our job together to flourish. And it is my honor to employ sensitive client-centered methods with the help of a Gestalt approach to get you to look at things differently. That means that we just look at everything as kind of a system. We work together and if we agree it could change, we pay attention to not just the one thing, but all the things that result from the change.
Above all else, I believe just like the founder of client-centered counseling Carl Rogers did, that clients are unique and with the right relationships, experiences and support - people can themselves and take ownership over their lives as they grow into their new way of being and by doing that, aligning what is outside with what is going on inside. Awareness itself is curative.
I am particularly trained on counseling issues surrounding LGBTQ+ identity, discrimination, trauma, familial stress, workplace struggles, religion, spirituality.
Client-Centered Therapy founder Carl Rogers emphasized authenticity. Meaning that if we can have a relationship in which we can be our honest “selves” we can explore how life can be overwhelming and talking about it in that type of relationship can be healing. My work is supervised by Tim Jenkins, LCPC and we train weekly on special topics in grand rounds.
People say I am easy-going and try to approach life with a sense of humor and I’ve also been told that I have an infectiously calm personality, and I hope to get to know each other and work together. I look forward to meeting you.
