Anxiety does not always look anxious. Sometimes it looks like a short temper, impatience, snapping at people you care about, avoiding conversation, or feeling constantly on edge.
For adults and teenagers alike, irritability can be one way an overloaded nervous system shows distress. A teen who seems defiant may actually be overwhelmed. An adult who becomes unusually impatient may be carrying persistent worry, sleep disruption, physical tension, or mental exhaustion.
Why anxiety can look like irritability
When the brain and body stay on alert, ordinary demands can start to feel much larger. Noise, interruptions, decisions, schoolwork, emails, traffic, and family questions may all become harder to tolerate.
